Recruiting update: 2 Mobile-area players commit with a surprise

A pair of Mobile-area football players made their college choices on Monday with a surprising twist.

St. Paul offensive lineman Lucas Taylor had long been an LSU commit, but decommitted and quickly announced his decision to play for Mississippi State.

The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Taylor committed to the Bulldogs after an unofficial visit to Mississippi State.

“Starkville felt like home!” Taylor told SI All-American. “Numerous family members up here, I know lots of the players, It’s awesome. They rolled out the red carpet. Solo unofficial [visitor] and spent all day on campus with the coaches.”

Taylor had numerous offers in addition to the Bulldogs and LSU, including Auburn, Florida, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Missouri, Ole Miss, Penn State and Florida State.

The 3-star Taylor is No. 15 on 247 Class of 2022 top recruits in the state and was a key component to St. Paul’s Class 5A undefeated championship season. He was selected ASWA Class 5A first-team all-state.

Daphne’s James Quinnelly chose Memphis. The 6-5, 275-pound defensive lineman Quinnelly picked Memphis over Appalachian State, Louisiana Tech, North Alabama, Troy, UAB and more.

In other recruiting news:

Briarwood Christian’s Christopher Vizzina recently announced two offers on social media.

The Class of 2023 quarterback picked up offers from Duke and Louisville to go along with an SEC offer from Kentucky for the 6-4, 200-pounder. Oher offers include Georgia Tech, Houston, UAB and Troy.

Michigan added its name to the list for Madison Academy athlete Deuce Spurlock. The 3-star recruit has an SEC offer from Mississippi State along with Memphis, Pittsburgh, UAB, South Alabama, Boston College and more.

Anniston offensive lineman RyQueze McElderry recently picked an SEC offer with South Carolina adding to the list. The 6-3, 340-pound junior also has offers from Tennessee, Florida State and UAB.

Calera receiver Kobe Prentice announced offers from both South Alabama and Troy. The 5-10, 175-pound senior also has offers from Arizona State, Arkansas State, Kansas State, Maryland and more.

Elba linebacker Chrystyile Caldwell announced offers from Washington State, South Alabama and Troy for the 6-1, 220-pound senior.

Helena receiver J.C. Sivley recently picked up an offer from UAB. The 6-6, 220-pound senior also has offers from Coastal Carolina and New Mexico.
